Hot springs around Monte Amiata
The Monte Amiata is an extinct volcano and the highest mountain in southern Tuscany. It shapes the landscape between Montepulciano, Siena and Grosseto. Although the Monte Amiata does no longer spit fire, there is still volcanic activity and thus a variety of hot springs around the foot of the mountain. Their rich thermal spring waters (about 40° C) are full of therapeutic gifts for the body and were already used by the Etruscans.
Bagno Vignoni is an ancient spa in the Valle d’Orcia. The village houses overlook a large medieval thermal pool where already Saint Catherine of Siena bathed. Andrei Tarkowski’s Film "Nostalgia" was filmed here, with unforgettable images of the hot mists evaporating from the pool. There is a recently modernized spa and pool at the "Hotel Posta Marcucci" where you can relax lying in hot water and enjoying a fantastic panoramic view of the Valle d’Orcia.
Total relax amidst nature
Around Monte Amiata there are also a few places where you can bathe in natural hot springs in the middle of woods and pastures. The best period of the year for a spa holiday is spring and autumn.
At the Terme di Petriolo you can find natural bathtubs at a temperature of about 38 ° C, and like this charming gentleman, you can smear your face with lime mud, supposedly good for the skin! The hot water finally pours into a small river where you can swim to freshen up.
Below the village of Bagno Vignoni there are some pools with warm water, surrounded by honey scented broom.
At Bagni San Filippo you can swim in a warm creek in the middle of the woods, facing the "White Whale", an imposing travertine formation.
