September 18 to 25, 2010

Born in London Julia has painted in both watercolour and oil all her life. She worked as a family doctor until 2000 and then trained as an Alexander Technique teacher whilst she also developed her artistic skills. She learned fine art oil portraiture from Zohar (an internationally acclaimed London portraitist), and portrait commissions form most of my oil painting work. She has taught watercolour classes of mixed abilities for several years, and runs three regular classes at her home.
Largely self taught, she is a figurative watercolour artist. That is she paints from what she sees and enjoys passing on the joys of outdoor painting to others, whether in Spain, Scotland or Italy. She says about her approach to painting: " The Alexander "Less is more" philosophy applies powerfully to watercolour when a quick sketch outdoors often works best, but then we feel we need to complicate things. When we are painting what we see we are only thinking of the present. I believe this helps to make it so enjoyable.

During the class at La Rogaia there will be at least one indoor session per day to teach basic drawing and watercolour techniques and then in the afternoon or early evening painting at suitable sites of interest nearby. Julia will also teach one oil still life session indoors. Materials are very important and many beginners have poor quality paper and brushes. Therefor materials can be purchased from Julia to ensure they are good quality. In this way participants can obtain good value for money and also minimise costs.

The classes take place at Villa La Rogaia, an outstanding old Umbrian country house with many gardens. It is situated near Lake Trasimeno between Rome and Florence. Participants stay in individually crafted double or single rooms (shared bathroom for two bedrooms) or in holiday apartments (for two persons), partly at the village of Castel Rigone at 4 km distance from La Rogaia.
The painting workshops will be mainly held outside on the big terrace or in the garden. The class will last for about six hours a day from Sunday to Friday, allowing for plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings of the villa and to go for trips to the nearby lake or towns. The number of participants is limited to 14 persons per class. The instruction language is German and English.
